Miracles at Promise Lodge By Charlotte Hubbard

This is a sweet story of Isaac, whose past seems to be his identity and how he is seen by others.  As he takes a job which requires the trust of others, some things are very hard for Isaac and he doesn't always make the best decisions.  He makes a mistake and has to work things out, which can be difficult.  I loved Maria, despite her many annoying flaws.  She added lots of color and "action" to the story. I enjoyed reading about the characters from earlier Promise Lodge books.  All the characters were fun to read about and the story line was well developed  I enjoyed this book very much. Amish Love Letters by Shelley Shepard Gray, Charlotte Hubbard and Rosalind Lauer

This book consists of four wonderful novellas.  It was such a good book and the three stories were each very different and do not relate to each other.  The novellas were written by very talented authors and I loved each of these stories.  The first deals with a very difficult situation and things which needed to be taken care of.  It was a realistic view of some not so perfect family issues.  

The second story entitled S.W.A.K., takes place in Promise Lodge which there are several books about. I have read the Promise Lodge series and love them.  This story was no exception.  I really enjoyed this story.  I enjoyed how Eddie came to help work on repairs for the Tornado damaged lodge. 

The last story was about a young widow who is navigating life without a husband and wondering what the future will bring as her parents try to set her up with someone.

Each story revolves around love letters written between two people.  This was a very sweet Amish book and the stories are well written and all very engaging.  You won't want to put the book down.

Hidden Away at Promise Lodge by Charlotte Hubbard

I think I have read each of the Promise Lodge books so far.  This one just might be my favorite one.  I enjoyed the fact that the lodge was visited by 2 young women trying to bring back good memories of their young years at church camp and who loved Amish romance books.  It was a "perfect fit" for their one week stay.  I loved their appearance and am sort of hoping it won't be their last???

Anyway, the story kept me reading throughout.  I really enjoyed the different storylines that went through the book.  Each capturing my attention and then the fear that the lodge would be destroyed due to a horrific storm kept my attention. The characters were all charming and you get to be a member of the lodge residents with all its warm feelings as the story continues.  I recommend this book to Amish readers and those that are still wondering if they would like or love Amish books.  It is really worth reading!

 Fully awake now, Lester swung his feet to the dock. When he could get a word in edgewise, he needed to deflate Agnes’s high-flying hopes in a hurry, because in her vivid imagination, she was already standing before the bishop with him, repeating her wedding vows. As he opened his mouth to speak, however, another urgent female voice hailed him.

 “Lester! Lester Lehman, it’s me—your Elverta!  I read about Gloria’s wedding in the paper, so it seemed like the perfect reason to come and see you!”

 Lester moaned. His sense of freedom, peace, and unencumbered living had just hit another serious snag.

  As the national newspaper for Plain communities, the Budget was a wonderful way to keep track of far-flung friends and kin, but he suddenly wished that Gloria—and Rosetta Wickey, their community’s original scribe—hadn’t been quite so descriptive in detailing the Lehman family’s relocation. The tiny town of Promise, Missouri was out in the middle of nowhere, yet Agnes and Elverta had apparently followed every line of the newspaper’s weekly reports right to his doorstep.

 As Elverta Horst, dressed in deep green, strode toward his dock, her tall, skinny, ramrod-straight body reminded Lester of a string bean. He knew better than to express that opinion, of course, because the woman he’d broken up with to begin courting his Delores had never been known for her sense of humor.

 “Wh-who’s this?” Agnes asked him under her breath.

 Never one to beat around the bush, Elverta stopped a few yards from the dock. She glanced at Lester before focusing on the flustered woman beside him. “And who might you be?” she demanded with a raised eyebrow.

Lester answered as indirectly as possible, because he knew these women would soon find out every little thing about one another. “Elverta, this is Delores’s best friend, Agnes Plank. She lives down the road from our former home in Sugarcreek,” he explained hastily. “And Agnes, this is Elverta Horst—”

 “And I was engaged to Lester before he took up with Delores,” Elverta put in purposefully. “First loves are often the strongest, ain’t so? The flame may flicker through the years, but it never really goes out.”

Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge by Charlotte Hubbard

I loved the humor that I found in this book as poor Lester is chased by two lonely ladies who are competing against one another to win his heart.  Elverta and Agnes were so very determined and would never consider giving up on poor Lester.  

This has been such a fun series and each book brings back some familiar faces into a very engaging story.  I hope the lodge will continue to bring fun new characters in to read about and enjoy.  I love the independence of the members of this community and how they have struggled with the very strict Coldstream bishop and found their own way.

Marlene and her brother have joined the Promise Lodge group after leaving Coldstream.

And just maybe she will find her way in this new community and in to the hearts of the Amish of Promise Lodge.  I know you will enjoy this book!  It was great.

With the girl’s laughter still dancing in his head, Raymond Overholt tried to refocus his thoughts. If he didn’t convince Mr. Kraybill to sell his handmade plaques, his past several weeks of work would be for nothing. He’d have to return home to Coldstream with his tail between his legs, and face a long, dreary lifetime of milking his dat’s cows. Running a dairy was honest, necessary work but Raymond didn’t enjoy spending his early mornings and late afternoons in a smelly barn disinfecting udders any more than the Holsteins liked having him around. Worse yet, if he overslept, his older brothers did the milking and left the hosing down and mucking out of the stalls for him.

       

“If your customers like these plaques, I can make more,” he assured the steely-haired storekeeper. “I—I really appreciate having the chance to sell them here in your new store. Our bulk market in Coldstream is dim and overcrowded with merchandise, and even if the owner there had display space, he wants nothing to do with artwork. It’s that Old Order thing.”

          

Mr. Kraybill smiled knowingly. “Jah, Amish stores don’t usually carry much that appears English even if they have a lot of customers come in from outside their community to shop,” he acknowledged. “But your plaques carry a solid Christmas message—‘Wise men still follow His star’ and the lyrics to ‘We Three Kings’ are meaningful reminders about following our Lord’s holy light. Thanksgiving always kicks off the Christmas buying season, so we’ll give it a shot, Raymond.”

           

He hoped his grateful grin didn’t appear too adolescent—or desperate. Raymond gazed around the store, where a gal in a pleated Amish kapp was stocking shelves in the rear. A few early shoppers were pushing carts into the grocery section. “If you need some extra hands when things get busy these next few weeks, I’d be happy to help, sir,” he offered. “I’ve not worked in a store, but I’m gut at tallying sums and I’m a quick learner.”

           

“I’ll keep it in mind,” Kraybill said with a nod. 

           

Raymond heard probably not in the storekeeper’s words, but he’d dealt with people’s dismissals before. If he’d dressed in dark broadfall pants with a plain shirt and suspenders—and if he’d chosen glasses with conservative frames—Kraybill might’ve taken him more seriously. But until he had no other choice than to submit to Old Order ways and join the church, Raymond was determined to wear clothing he liked.

           

“I’ll be back in a few days to see how my signs are selling,” he said. “Denki for giving me a chance.”

 My Review:

Well, I just really enjoyed this sweet romance.  It was so enjoyable to watch the characters change and grow in the their own respective ways.  Becca had a goal to travel and needed to train a replacement for her job at the Amish Market.  Gideon's father sent him from Texas to Indiana to fill Becca's shoes.  He is missing Texas and his smaller community of Beeville.  As the story continues, the love story starts to bloom. Going from friends to falling in love in a sweet way was fun to see.

It was interesting to read about her plans to join the Mennonite Disaster Services and to find out about what they do to help others.  I love Amish Markets and shops so it was a fun read.

An Amish Christmas Star by Shelley Shepard Gray, Charlotte Hubbard, Rosalind Lauer

 

An excellent set of three Christmas novellas written by three excellent Amish authors.  I really enjoyed them all, despite the fact, Christmas is still a few months away! These stories will definitely set the mood for happy holidays.

Each story was different from the others and it is hard to see the stories end.  These would all be great characters for their own novel.

The first story is about two Amish people needing to get to certain destinations and their various rides give them definite problems along the way.  As they travel together, despite many setbacks, they find their way.

The next story was about Raymond and Lizzie whose relationship is hindered by a Bishop whose own personal feelings cause problems for his congregation, including Raymond and Lizzie, of course.

The final story is about a newlywed couple whose life is disrupted by a job which keeps them apart from one another. 

These are all great stories and so enjoyable to read.  loved them all!

Love Blooms in Morning Star (The Maidels of Morning Star Book 4) By Charlotte Hubbard

A very nice addition to the previous books, I really liked this book, the strong women that were not afraid to stand up for themselves.  Jo is a strong character that although soon to be married, does not let that stand in her way of  continuing her work at the Amish market that she and a group of women started in Morning Star.

Things do not always go in the paths we want or expected and sometimes adjustments must be made.  Drusilla has difficulties, is very negative on the subject of marriage and is not easy to understand as Jo struggles to communicate with and understand her own mother while trying to make a life for herself with Michael.

It's a very good book with realistic problems and trials.  I enjoyed this book and think you will as well.

You’d Like to Be Amish? Hmm…

             Over the years, I’ve heard so many readers say, “Oh, but I’d love to be Amish!”

I smile. While I believe these folks are sincere, I think they’ve read so much Amish fiction and perhaps visited Lancaster or Holmes Counties or other Amish communities and gotten the idea that the Amish lead idyllic, trouble-free lives that are far removed from the hectic world most of us deal with.

            Myself, although I greatly admire and respect the Amish for their work ethic, their unquestioning faith in God, and the way they’ve kept their families and social network intact in the modern world, I could not join the Old Order church or live as a real-life Amish woman does. I mean no disrespect towards these fine people! But here are reasons I couldn’t convert to their faith…even if they would vote me into their fellowship after I made the enormous life changes such a conversion would require.

            First, I don’t speak PA Dutch or German. When you’re reading stories or visiting Amish shops, everyone’s speaking English—but at home, at church, and amongst themselves, the Amish speak a language that’s tricky to learn, partly because PA Dutch isn’t a written language.

            Second, I can’t imagine cooking for families with six or eight kids without basic small appliances like a mixer or a toaster! Most of us would probably benefit from living a more “unplugged” life, but the absence of electricity means you don’t have air conditioning, an automatic washer/dryer—and you probably brush your teeth before bed with the help of a flashlight! It’s true that many Amish embrace solar power these days, but it’s mostly for businesses. Women at home aren’t allowed to plug into a rooftop solar panel to run any appliances. I could probably adjust to living without Internet or a computer—but that means I’d no longer be a novelist!

            I would also have trouble tolerating a male-dominated society where husbands and church leaders always have the final say. While it’s true I’d be better off if I kept my opinions to myself more often, I would really bristle if my husband didn’t give me permission to do things the way I thought was best. I also like to think that women have something to contribute to church life besides food for the meal following the service!

            Another major stumbling block for me: a religious faith that insists “it’s God’s will” when horrible things happen. For instance, I don’t like to blame God when drunk drivers crash into buggies, or when other human error/meddling causes great misfortune. I also have trouble with a faith that won’t allow expression of artistic or musical talent, as is true in many conservative Amish communities. This has become a theme in many of my stories! I also dislike shunning, and the way conservative Amish churches consider it “an unforgiveable sin” if baptized members leave the Amish faith. The Amish aren’t encouraged to read the Bible for themselves, either. They rely on their bishop’s/preachers’ interpretations of Scripture—and those men tend to preach on the verses that support such viewpoints as wives submitting to their husbands.

            Most of my issues stem from living in more permissive English/non-Amish society, of course. Folks who are raised Amish seem quite content to obey their district’s “rules” because it’s what they know—the 85% retention of their young people certainly supports that. And they don’t seem bothered by rules that have no apparent connection to faith in God. For instance, why must married men grow beards, but they’re not allowed mustaches (which are considered “military” in appearance)? Why are they not allowed to use zippers in their clothing?

            Given the turmoil and upheaval in our lives these days, I totally agree with readers who believe the Amish have found a better way to live, apart from hatred and violence. And I would probably be a far better person if I did more blending in and less expressing of my opinions!

“I like that smile on your face, Jo. You’re happiest when you’re baking, ain’t so?”    

Jo’s stomach fluttered when Michael stepped into her shop. His evergreen wreath suggested that he had something other than flirtation in mind, and that was just as well, wasn’t it? “That fresh wreath smells just like Christmas,” she said. “I suppose you and your dat make those at your Queen City greenhouse, jah?”

 “We do,” Michael replied. “And we’ve brought enough of them to hang on everyone’s shop entry for the holiday season.”

 Jo stopped stirring her frosting to gaze at him. “That’s very generous. “You fellows have gone all out to decorate The Marketplace for us, and I really appreciate it.”

 The blush that tinted Michael’s cheeks told Jo that he felt every bit as shy around her as she was near him.

“It’s been a boon to our nursery business, selling our plants here,” he said with a dimpled smile. “But more than that, Dat and I, well—we’ve really enjoyed coming to Morning Star to spend time with you and your mamm. And—and my invitation to come to Queen City and see our greenhouses full of poinsettias still stands.”

 Jo swallowed hard. How many times had she dreamed of taking Michael up on his offer? “I—we’ll see,” she hedged. “Baking for the Christmas season is keeping me busier this year—”

“But if you can spare a couple of weekdays in early December, the sight of all those bright red poinsettias will take your breath away,” Michael insisted.

Jo’s heart was pounding so hard that Michael could probably hear it. What a joy it would be see those greenhouses filled with such vibrant Christmas flowers.

As she once again noticed how slim and attractive he was, however, Jo was even more aware that she probably outweighed him by thirty pounds. A guy like Michael would never see beyond her thick glasses—and even though he’d never met her deceased dat, there was no getting around the fact that Jo had been created in Joseph Fussner’s image.
